Sudden pain, a burst stitch after surgery, or a broken tooth – these emergencies cannot be postponed. We are here for you when it matters. Our team in Basel provides professional emergency treatment for both children and adults to relieve discomfort immediately.

In an emergency, you don’t need to make an appointment like at regular dentist practices. Just come directly to our practice!

When is a dental emergency service necessary?

Tooth pain is often excruciating and can significantly affect daily life. However, not every dental issue requires immediate emergency treatment. In some cases, visiting a regular dentist the following day may be sufficient.

After a dental surgical procedure, a new filling, or a dental prosthesis, mild to moderate pain for a few days is completely normal. A lost crown or filling is only an emergency if nerves or tooth roots are exposed or adjacent teeth are at risk.

Our emergency service is required when the pain threshold is unbearable and cannot be alleviated by painkillers, or when a tooth injury with heavy bleeding needs immediate treatment. In these cases, we ensure that you receive the urgently needed help 365 days a year at our dental clinic.

Examples of an emergency

To give you a better understanding of when you should contact our emergency service, we’ve listed some examples below. If you’re still unsure whether you need an emergency dentist, simply pick up the phone and ask our staff.

Is a dental accident with a knocked-out or broken tooth a dental emergency?

A broken or completely knocked-out tooth, as well as cracks in the teeth, are emergencies and should never be postponed. Especially if intense pain or persistent bleeding occurs, immediate treatment by a dentist is essential.

  • Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water to clean the damaged tooth piece.
  • Knocked-out Tooth: Place the tooth in H-milk, saliva, or a special tooth rescue box. You can obtain these from our practice or any pharmacy of your choice.

Is a lost filling, crown, or bridge an emergency?

It depends. It is an emergency if a lost filling, crown, or bridge causes adjacent teeth to become unstable. It’s also an emergency if nerves or tooth roots are affected.

Bleeding Gums: When should you take action?

Occasional gum bleeding while brushing your teeth is normal. However, it can be a first sign of gingivitis. If bleeding occurs regularly or the gums are sensitive, it’s advisable to see a dentist. Early examination can help avoid periodontal disease and prevent greater damage. However, this is not an emergency.

Persistent Tooth and Jaw Pain?

Constant, severe pain in the tooth or jaw area, accompanied by swallowing difficulties, could indicate an infection. If pronounced swelling or high fever develops, it’s strongly recommended to contact an emergency dentist immediately.

In such situations, contact our dentists in the emergency center. This is also an emergency, and we will treat you as quickly as possible.

Emergency treatment for children as well

Our youngest ones often suffer from toothaches, which is why we’re available for them 365 days a year, whether it’s a dental accident or tooth pain.

Parents are understandably concerned about their children, but it’s important to stay calm and not react overly sensitively. Below, we’d like to introduce the most common causes of toothaches and also address dental emergencies for children.

This way, you can better assess whether you need emergency service.

Swollen Cheek – A Possible Warning Sign!

A suddenly swollen cheek, accompanied by fever, often indicates an infection in the gums or jawbone.

Initial mild swelling can be relieved with medication. However, as infections can spread quickly, it’s important to see an emergency dentist promptly.

Mouth Injuries in Children – Quick Reaction Needed!

While playing, running, and roughhousing, accidents can happen. Blows to the mouth, damaged teeth, or even tooth loss are not uncommon.

If a tooth is damaged or knocked out, an emergency dentist should be contacted as soon as possible. The lost tooth can be stored in saliva, milk, or a special tooth rescue box, just like in adults, until treatment.

Teething is Painful, but Not an Emergency

When the first teeth come through, it causes discomfort for many babies and toddlers. However, this is not an emergency. The growing tooth presses against the gums, which can cause unpleasant pain. Special teething rings or cooled aids can provide relief. Gently massaging the gums can also help.

Loose Milk Teeth Are a Natural Process

Milk teeth loosen to make room for permanent teeth. This is perfectly normal but may cause slight pain or pressure points when eating. This is not an emergency.

Often, biting into a hard apple is enough to let the tooth fall out by itself. If that doesn’t work or if there are complaints, a dentist can gently remove the tooth. In such cases, schedule a regular appointment with a dental practice.

Cavities Are Not a Reason for Emergency Services

For cavity treatment, please make a regular appointment with a dentist at our practice. This is not an emergency.

Milk teeth are particularly prone to cavities because the enamel is not as resistant as in permanent teeth. Sugary foods and inadequate dental hygiene promote the formation of cavities. A healthy diet with little sugar and regular, thorough brushing help prevent cavities and keep the teeth healthy long-term.

Tooth Pain Due to Misalignment

Crooked teeth often occur when milk teeth fall out prematurely. Usually, there’s no acute need for treatment, but misalignment can have long-term effects on dental and jaw health.

A visit to an orthodontic practice is advisable to avoid future problems. In many cases, braces can gently correct the misalignment. The orthodontist will also find a solution for the tooth pain caused by this.
